  3. Hi,

    This is my movie review.

    Movie: Letters to Juliet

This is one of those movies that I have been waiting to see since catching a few seconds of the trailer. Amanda Seyfried plays an adorable American girl named Sophie stuck in a mediocre relationship when she goes off to Italy for a vacation. She discoveries a “Juliet’s ’s secretaries” club where a group of women answer letters written to Juliet. In writing back, the women of the club believe that they are sharing the problems, pain and joy of falling in love. Sophie finds one unanswered letter and makes it her personal project to reply to the woman who wrote it years ago. I really loved Sophie’s character as she was relatable, the kind of girl that you would want to befriend if she sat down next to you in the park. The vulnerability that comes from Sophia’s young romantic ideals and the stark contrast to her current relationship elevates this movie beyond the typical romantic comedy and into an enjoyable film that captures real love with all of its confusion, heartbreak, self-discovery and inevitable fate.

    * I hope you like my review*

  4. Hey,

this is my first post to this new summer program and i wanted to review the new twilight saga movie:eclipse. which i saw for half the price on tuesday. i must say that it was defiantly better than the first two movies because there was a lot more action and better makeup and effects. also the actors (kristen stewart) have gotten a lot better. the movie stayed close to the books as far the major scenes go.however the recasting of victoria did not really do any justice i preferred rachelle.and most of all you got to love how sweat and armful taylor lautner was looking throughout the movie, unless you are team edward. but regardless eclipse is currently the best twilight movie of the saga so far.

  5. I saw Inception yesterday and enjoyed it, as one who chomps nails and curls up in her seat during thrilling scenes. The cast was superb, and now I am not as resistant to the idea that Ellen Page could play the intense, kick-arse, genius hacker Lisabeth Salander in the American version of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo book trilogy-to-movie.

I was annoyed by the ending, but it wasn't unexpected, given the ambiguous ending of director Christopher Nolan's Momento (I am not a Batman fan, so I have not seen his Dark Knight work).

What is most inspiring and impressive about this film is its complexity. I was not surprised to learn that Nolan has been toying with the premise of this film since his teenage years (he is in his thirties now). It is rare and a breath of fresh air to have an intelligent film from Hollywood that makes the viewer think.

I would recommend this film for an exciting, thought-provoking cinema experience.

  6. Book Review: Brightly Woven

This is fairytale that will capture the hearts of teenagers everywhere. And one of the coolest things is that the author who is in just her 20s, wrote this book as a birthday gift for a friend. It strays away from the cliché love stories, Gossip Girl-esque books, and vampy romances to tell a fresh, beautifully told romance. This romance is not oversweet, and Bracken skillfully layers sorrow, suspense, mystery, regret in the joyful journey of discovering love. Sydelle , a girl who grew up in the desert, is a skilled weaver who wishes to see more of the world. North, an unofficial wizard, performs a service and as a reward, takes Sydelle on his trip to the capital. Sydelle is an intriguing girl with stunning courage, a gentle heart and is refreshingly modest about her beauty. North, is by turns a gentleman and an outrageous jerk, but as the reader later discovers, not without his own reasons. Brightly Woven is one of those rare books that inspire within me an urge to buy the book and reread on rainy days, curled up by the windowsill. It’s definitely a keeper.

  7. Watched The Karate Kid (remake) staring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. Overall a really great movie but there were a couple of parts that were quite confusing, expecially when Smith tries to speak chinese, but also very humourous seeing him struggle.

Overall rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

  8. I saw Karate Kid (2010) several weeks ago. As a fan of the martial arts, I think that this is THE #1 movie of the summer. This movie exceeded all my expectations from watching the original film and the trailers. The cast was very impressive, especially Jaden Smith, considering the fact that this is his first job in this career. Unlike the original movie, where the protagonist seems rather untrained in the martial arts during the fight scences, both the protagonist and the antagonist are at an acceptional level. The plot was also much more inspiring than the original film. After watching this movie, you would probably have an uncontrolable desire to go take some Kung Fu lessons. I rate this movie 10/10, hope that everyone else will enjoy it as much as I did!

  9. Hi,
What if you had to move to another place, totally different from where you live? A place where you don't even know the language they speak, the clothing they wear, and the traditions they have. This is what a 12 year old boy had to do. He moved to China and had to embrace the customs of China.
Hope, courage, adventurous, funny, and enlightening. The movie that I am talking about is Karate Kid 2010! This movie not only tells us about what it means to take a step forward, but also what it means to stand out from the crowd. Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan comes together to teach us some special moves of Karate.
This movie shows us how to face problems with friends, your peers, and family members. Jaden Smith in this movie learns Karate as if that was his only friend in China.
I thought this movie was extremely funny, and shows a lot of determination, and passion to learn Karate; especially for someone who never has.
I would rate this ONE of my best movies. I would really recommend this movie to anybody, it has no particular age. The trailer might seem a little cheesy, but the movie...just wait and watch.

  11. To the Karate Kid watchers - yes, the action effects are amazing in this movie. I love Jackie Chan. They said Will Smith's son does a good job with the martial arts performance.

Toy Story will always be a favourite. This is one of those movies I am never sure if it is for the kids or the adults.

Letters to Juliet seems like it would be another one to try. It sounds especially interesting because it was written for someone else by a friend.

Twilight series will never disappoint. I was surprised that there were a few negative comments because everyone I talked to who saw the movie said it was the best one yet.

    Keep watching and posting.

  12. Movie Review: 500 days of summer

I saw this some time ago. It's a great movie and gives a unique take on love. If you are tired of cheesy romances then you should watch this. It's a quirky and funny and perfect to watch with some friends. And if you're a girl, Zooey Deschanel is some serious fashion inspiration.

  13. Have you ever talked to your neighbour before? Went into their house? Did they look suspicious to you EVER? Well the movie I'm talking about is 'The spy next door'.

Jackie Chan full of action, comes back to show something that we've never seen before.

Bob (Jackie Chan) is a spy who works with the CIA to stop a top a criminal. Behind the world he's been posing as an importer ande has been dating his neighbour, a single mother (Gillan) with three annoying not so getting along type children. Bob retires from the agency to live a normal life. The biggest challenge is yet to come for him, taking care of the kids when Gillan is out of town for a few nights.

Will he survive halloween, bedtimes, teens and nerds? Can he make it without Gillan? Will he have to use his super agent skills. Can he manage evrything on his own?

You'll just have to watch and enjoy the thrilling scenes from Jackie Chan to Amber Valleta.

I personally, liked this movie, especially when I was watching this with my brother. I think this movie will make all of you laugh and make you an agent for ATLEAST a day.

    *Athulya B*

P.S. I love Jackie Chan movies.

  14. Did anyone watch the A-team?
I know some of you are too young to be a fan of this title, but the awesomeness of the movie will truly amaze you. Packed with explosions and fast-paced action sequences, the movie was a thrill ride. Other than these, the strategies the characters used to fight the crime were very unique; everytime when I thought they were in trouble, it turned out everything was a part of the plan.
To action film viewers: this is a movie you dont want to miss, as it is easily one of the most entertaining movies this year :)

I didn't plan to watch the Karate kid at first, because I am not too fond of stuff related to fighting kids... but after looking at all the positive comments, I might give it a try.

  15. A few days ago, I saw "Blood Diamond" (2006) in class for my summer school civics course, dealing with human rights.

In the beginning, we are introduced to Solomon Vandy, a fisherman in Sierra Leone who is seperated from his wife, daughters, and son by the rebel forces during the Sierra Leone Civil war (about 1996). Taken as a strong and healthy miner for the rebels, he eventually comes across a large pink "blood diamond" - one that could easily sell for millions. Solomon hides the diamond rather than give it to the rebels, but immediately after the camp is taken to Freetown by the government. In jail, a white smuggler by the name of Danny Archer overhears about the diamond and helps Solomon break out of jail so that he can get the diamond for himself. Solomon is promised a reunion with his family and especially his son, who has become a child soldier for the rebel forces. With the help of journalist Maddy Bowen, the three of them trek through the African jungle to retrieve the diamond - Solomon desperately wanting his family back, Danny trying to retrieve the diamond to get out of Africa, and Maddy needs Danny's help to write and expose the trade of blood diamonds to western countries.

Overall, I found this movie very powerful and definetly an eye-opener towards conflict, third world countries, and "blood diamonds". Personally, it was depressing (especially the ending!) but also inspiring people to make a difference and help those in need. However, in the middle of the plot things weren't as interesting or well fleshed out, especially the various characters and their development. Overall, I give this film a rating of 8/10, above average for its strong and clear message.

  17. A-TEAM!!!! BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!!!! For those who watched it. Bosco B.A. Baracus' power-bomb was the best!! The actor of B.A. was Rampage Jackson. He substituted Mr. T and come to think about it he did pretty good imitation of Mr. T.

  19. I enjoyed watching Inception SilverCity Theatre at Fairview Mall. It was mind-numbing and confusing... so much that I even forgot I was watching a movie. I felt that I was right in the action. Being a self-professed film geek, I decided to do so more research into how the movie was created. To be honest, I laughed when Ellen Page entered onscreen since I thought of the Juno film where she was pregnant as a teenager. However, I bit my tongue when she protrayed Ariadne, a smart and intellectual person who was witty and daring. I liked how Michael Caine was casted as the Dom's father and educator as well as the grandfather to the children. Speaking of which, I enjoyed watching DiCaprio's performance.

My remaining question is... What happens to Ariadne and Arthur's relationship? Do they ever fall in love? ;)

RATING: 10/10 dreams out of another 10/10 dreams (within ANOTHER 10/10 dreams out of a SUPREME dream of a dreamer)

*SPOILER ALERT and TECHNICAL FACTS BELOW*
    *READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION*

    Haha~

The film, Inception, directed and written by Christopher Nolan, is a science-fiction and action film dealing with the concept of implanting ideas and stealing information from one’s brain while subconscious. It stars lead character, Leonardo DiCaprio as “Dom Cobb”, the thief who plants dreams and Ellen Page as “Ariadne”, the best intellectual designer. As well, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays “Arthur”, the sidekick to Dom, Ken Watanabe as “Saito”, the commissioner to Dom, Cillian Murphy as “Robert Fischer Jr”, the heir to the energy company and ultimately, Saito’s competition. Within the film, the audience sees how Pfister collaborated with the crew and director to create it. He explains that putting certain scenes in different colour sets, it affects the movie and relates to the corresponding action happening in the different dream scenes. From an interview with Variety, he states that a hotel room is filmed in gold tones, snow scenes in white, and Los Angeles exteriors in “dark, steel-blue hue”#. After this effect, it helps to differentiate the different layers of sub-consciousness from Fischer’s dreams. According to MTV, in the scene where Ellen Page plays around with exploding debris suspended in mid-air, Pfister used a “super-high-speed Photo-Sonics” camera while the special effects supervisor, Chris Corbould used a set of air-cannons# to blow up the objects and give them the feeling of them being ‘frozen in time’. In the Parisian street where it folded over, it took eight months to complete using CGI, according to Paul Franklin, the visual-effects supervisor. To suspend the falling car in stilled motion, they used the high-speed Photo-Sonic while Pfister controlled the lighting after consulting with the VFX (video effects) crew and his knowledge on live-action filming. On screen, the car falling off the bridge was slightly off-center to direct the audience’s eyes from the background to the foreground and make it visually appealing to the audience to focus on the car. According to Pfister on Den of Geek, he states that, "In this movie, with its very surreal elements, we had to make sure they [VFX crew] had a basis in reality and matched the principal photography.” Only in this cohesiveness, did Inception achieve great actions and continuity in the movie. Without the role of the director of photography, the movie would have been non-surreal and not as breath-taking.

I felt that Pfister, the director of photography decided not to film Inception in 3-D because it would deter from the plot and the viewing experience of the audience. It was confusing as it was without the eye strain and pain caused by 3D!

  20. Well, Sherlock Holmes was released last winter, but I just watched it this weekend. I thought that it was a great movie, and I especially loved Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. He's a great actor.
There's also a lot of great chemistry between the characters, especially the strong friendship between Holmes and Watson.
The movie's got that mysterious and gritty feel of Victorian era London, and it's packed with action. Holmes, being the genius detective that he is, makes observations and deductions according to the smallest details that will really blow your mind.
I can't wait to see the sequel next year!

  21. a few weeks ago, i watched the twilight saga: eclipse. i thought it was good movie and i really liked it when bella kept on rejecting jacob and he got really mad...so funny , but sad too. i cant believe bella actually agreed to marry edward. the fight with the new vampires (scary eyes!!) was really scary, but the good guys always win soo thats good. there were a lot of emotions and actions flying around and thats what made the movie so appealing to me...
cant wait to see the last twilight saga: breaking dawn!

  22. I watched inception a week ago. This is one of those rare films that keeps you guessing before, during, and after the movie. The complexity of the plot will give you a head ache. Although I won't be giving out any spoilers about the movie, I will promise that you will like this film after watching it. I rate this movie 9/10. I recomend this movie to all who like movies with a complex story that will keep you thinking days after watching it.

  23. Toy Story 3 was amazing just like its prequels.

I think this series is really special because from my personal experience the sequels are never nearly as good as the original but not only was Toy Story 3 on par with Toy Story but Toy Story 2 as well. It's like it's one continuous movie! I love how Disney and Pixar made the viewers laugh (I just about lost it when Buzz was in Spanish mode) and cry at the end-I will not lie I felt a tear coming out. It's enjoyable by kids, teens, adults -it's just the perfect family movie and a brillant way to end off this memorable movie trilogy.

  24. Hi again,

I watched the movie LEAP YEAR!!! This movie was hilarious, I could not stop laughing. Who knew love would bloom by travelling places for two nights. I would rate this one of the best movies that I have watched in years. I would rate it 10/10.

  25. I watched eclipse couple of days ago, and I thought it was a waste of my time. I was looking so forward to watching the movie, and now it disappointed me. I did not get the actual plot of the movie, was it Jacob or the NEW BORNS? I had no idea. There was no meaning in this movie. I would not rate this movie, because I do not want to disappoint eclipse lovers!

  26. The concept of Toy Story had never really appealed to me. Children's toys, these immobile pieces of plastic assembled together, were not supposed to talk to each other once humans turned their backs on them. They were not supposed to have emotions.

My friends begged to differ. They said Toy Story 3 was an amazing, action-packed, and moving film. They strongly recommended that I watch it. So, I did.

I would have to agree with them.

Andy, owner of a plethora of toys stored in a large toychest, is 17 years old now. He hasn’t touched his toys in years, until his mother asks him to clear his room before he leaves home for college. He decides that his old toys will all go to the attic except for Woody, whom he’ll bring to college; however, a mix-up results in all of them going to the local Sunnyside Daycare.

Lotso, a cuddly teddy bear, welcomes Andy’s toys to Sunnyside and advertises it as a welcoming place for abandoned toys to be played with. Little do they (except for the discerning Woody) know that Lotso has created a caste system where new toys are battered and bruised by toddlers, while established toys such as Lotso himself are gently handled by older children. Woody must then go on a mission to save the rest of Andy’s toys from the clutches of Lotso and his dangerous cronies.

The film was as action-packed as it could possibly be. I constantly feared for their safety (I wonder, do toys in the Toy Story franchise ever experience death?), whether they were slowly trying to escape Sunnyside Daycare, or inching toward flames on a conveyor belt. Although not with the same edge-of-your-seat experience as, say, The Dark Knight was, I found myself highly engrossed in the film.

The summary above probably sounds farfetched. As a matter of fact, you might even be like I was, and cast off the idea of talking toys as ludicrous. However, there was just something about the film that made me feel for the 3D-animated toys. They face neglect, violence, relief, manipulation, and heartbreak, as though they were all human. Ultimately, theirs is a story of the changing nature of love over time and the strengthening of friendships upon dealing with struggle.

Would I recommend this film to others? Most certainly. It is a film for all ages. Anyone can relate to their own childhood experiences of playing with toys - be they stuffed animals, plastic toys, homemade paper dolls, you name it - and the love and care that goes into forming friendships with the people and things we hold dear.

  27. Christopher Nolan is known for his fair share of things. He likes to repeatedly cast the same actors in his films. He has perfected the art of heart-pulsing action. In the case of Inception, he apparently likes to confuse people.

Sometime in the future when dreams can be manipulated, lives a dream “extractor” named Dom Cobb. He is offered a job by businessman Saito: to plant an idea into the mind of the heir of Saito’s corporate rival, Robert Fischer. If Cobb and his team complete this mission, Cobb will be finally allowed to return to the States where he is currently charged with murdering his wife.

As the mission carries on, we learn more about Cobb’s origins: the story of his wife’s death, why he isn’t allowed to be the architect of the dreams he is in, how he can’t seem to let go of certain memories. In the meantime, the dream they have placed Fischer in is comprised of complex “layers of unreality” and they must fight to keep (a sedated) Fischer’s dream self alive while making peace with him as though they weren’t barging into his subconscious.

As a science-fiction film, Inception was a relatively more difficult film to understand than most other films currently playing. Nolan’s interpretation of how dreams can work was particularly intriguing - the whole concept of creating dream settings for people, maintaining security of the subconscious, and potentially manipulating people through mental weaknesses, seems new as far as I’m concerned. There were points when I had to stop and think about which “layer” the current scene was in, but it was an overall entertaining (and actually thought-provoking) experience.

Before I decided to watch this film, many of my peers recommended it, saying it was “amazing” yet “confusing.” I would suggest this movie mainly to those who are willing to think beyond the boundaries of reality, and delve into a dream world where anything imaginable is possible.
